Join two of XQuery's early hackers - the co-creators of the recently-launched MarkMail service - and find out what they've learned about coding with XQuery over the past four years.

XQuery is the fastest growing query language, with all the major players embracing it in some form.  As coders test its limits and capabilities, many are discovering how fast and easy XQuery can be for building agile, internet applications.

Your Hosts

Jason Hunter of "Java Servlet Programming" fame and Ryan Grimm, O’Reilly Media’s former XQuery sage, will be your Jedi masters for the day. Their most recent creation is markmail.org, a community-focused, searchable mail archive that sets a new standard for search and discovery

You'll learn XQuery tips and tricks, plus see how Jason and Ryan make MarkMail and other XQuery applications fly. There will also be plenty of time for hands-on coding.

"Best XQuery App" Contest

Download a trial license of MarkLogic Server now and start building your first XQuery internet application. Share it with Jason and Ryan to get key feedback, plus a chance to vie for "Best XQuery App" of the day. The winner will receive an 8Gb Apple iPhone.

Visit the Collaborative Code Workshop area of our developer site for code examples and other useful resources.

Jason Hunter is Principal Technologist with Mark Logic, specializing in large-scale XML content manipulation using XQuery, and is the co-creator of MarkMail. He's probably best known as the author of "Java Servlet Programming" (O'Reilly Media). He's also an Apache Member and as Apache's representative on the Java Community Process Executive Committee he established a landmark agreement allowing open source Java. He's publisher of Servlets.com, an original contributer to Apache Tomcat (and Apache Ant committer), the creator of the JDOM open source project, a member of the expert groups responsible for Servlet, JSP, JAXP, and XQJ API development, and was recently appointed Sun Java Champion.

Ryan Grimm is an engineer at Mark Logic Corporation, a co-creator of MarkMail, and has been an XQuery enthusiast for three years. Prior to Mark Logic, he was a software engineer for O’Reilly Media where he developed the XQuery back-end for SafariU, a custom publishing application built on MarkLogic Server. While at O’Reilly, Ryan also created O’Reilly Labs. Ryan started his career as a search engine developer for LANDex and then was a web developer for Iowa State University’s web support services department. He contributes regularly to the Mark Logic developer code workshop.
